As the September Equinox arrives, we experience one of the most significant energetic shifts of the year, the true beginning of the Astrological New Year in the Southern Hemisphere. While many people associate the New Year with January 1st or the start of Aries season in March, for those of us living south of the equator, our energetic and seasonal cycles follow a slightly different rhythm.

This time of year, around September 22 or 23, marks both the Spring Equinox and the Astrological New Year for the Southern Hemisphere. A a moment of perfect balance when day and night are equal in length. It’s nature’s way of reminding us that renewal and growth are on the horizon.

Setting Intentions
It’s the perfect time to let go of the old and plant seeds of intention for what’s next.

Why the Southern Hemisphere’s Astrological Year Begins Now

In the Northern Hemisphere, the March Equinox (around March 20 or 21) marks the start of spring and the entry of the Sun into Aries (the first sign of the zodiac) symbolizing birth, courage, and new beginnings.

But for us in the Southern Hemisphere, the cycles are reversed. Our September Equinox signals the same energetic moment (the Sun entering Aries), but it aligns with our own Spring season, when life stirs again after winter. The Earth begins to tilt toward the Sun, days grow longer, and nature awakens with warmth, colour, and vitality.

This astronomical and astrological alignment means that, energetically, September (not March) is our true “New Year” moment. It’s when we naturally feel inspired to start fresh, set new intentions and move forward with renewed clarity and energy.

A Season to Reflect, Release, and Begin Again

The Equinox brings with it a unique sense of balance (equal day and night, light and shadow). It’s a beautiful invitation to pause and reflect on the past 12 months:

  • What have you learned?

  • What are you ready to release?

  • What dreams or projects still feel important to nurture before the calendar year ends?

This reflection helps us clear the emotional and mental space needed to welcome in new beginnings with openness and purpose.

Setting Intentions Instead of Resolutions

While traditional New Year’s resolutions made in January often fade away within weeks, the Astrological New Year offers a more natural rhythm for intention setting. We’re supported by the energy of growth, expansion and light. Everything around us is blooming, making it the perfect time to plant seeds for what we wish to grow in our own lives.

Rather than rigid goals or deadlines, intentions invite us to focus on how we want to feel and who we want to become. They evolve gently, just like nature and remind us that transformation doesn’t need to be forced, it unfolds in its own time.

Honouring the Energy of the Astrological New Year

During the end of September and beginning of October, take a few moments to reconnect with your inner rhythm:

  • Sit quietly and reflect on what the past year has taught you.

  • Write down what you wish to complete or release before the year ends.

  • Set one or two heartfelt intentions for the new astrological cycle ahead.

You might also light a candle, diffuse a calming blend of Frankincense, Lemon, and Lavender, or listen to a gentle sound healing track to align your energy with the season of renewal.

A Fresh Start, Rooted in Balance

The September Equinox and Astrological New Year reminds us that balance is the foundation of growth. As light and warmth return to the Southern Hemisphere, may you feel inspired to awaken your own inner energy, releasing what’s past and opening to what’s ready to bloom.

A New Year is a blank canvas, waiting for you to paint it with your dreams, hopes and endless possibilities.

This is your moment to begin again in rhythm with the Earth, the Sun and your own heart.
