As summer fades and the cooler days of autumn begin to settle in, nature offers us a special moment of pause: the Autumn Equinox. In the Southern Hemisphere, this occurs around March 20–21, when day and night are perfectly balanced. It’s a powerful reminder to pause, reflect and realign your energy as the seasons shift.

What is the Autumn Equinox?
For most of us, the Equinox might seem like just another calendar date. But energetically, it’s a natural pause point. The word “Equinox” comes from Latin, meaning “equal night”, where day and night are in perfect balance.
This balance in nature mirrors the balance we can cultivate in our own lives. It’s a gentle invitation to check in with your mind, body and spirit. Are you carrying energy or habits that no longer serve you? Are there areas in your life that need more balance, calm or focus?
The Equinox is the perfect time to notice, release and realign.
Why This Energy Matters
Autumn is a season of transition and reflection. Leaves change color and fall, days grow shorter and the pace of life naturally slows. Energetically, this is the perfect moment to:
Release what’s no longer serving you such as stress, old habits or emotional clutter.
Ground yourself in the present, connecting with your inner balance.
Realign with your priorities and intentions, preparing for the months ahead.
By consciously working with this energy, you can move into autumn feeling lighter, calmer and more centered.
A Gentle Autumn Equinox Ritual
This simple ritual can be performed on March 20–21 to honour the Equinox energy. It’s designed to help you release, ground and realign.
You will need:
A quiet space where you won’t be disturbed
A journal or piece of paper and a pen
A candle for focus
Optional: grounding essential oils (like Cedarwood, Vetiver or Wild Orange)
Step-by-Step Ritual
1. Settle and Connect
Sit comfortably and take three slow, deep breaths.
Place one hand on your heart and one on your belly.
Feel the connection to your body and the earth beneath you.
2. Reflect and Release
Take a moment to notice what’s weighing you down or no longer serving your growth.
Write it down on your paper. As you write, imagine each word gently leaving your body and energy field.
You may like to burn the paper safely (if possible) as a symbolic release, but if you can't do this, tearing up the paper and throwing it away will work just as well.
3. Ground and Align
Close your eyes and imagine roots growing from your feet into the earth, grounding you.
Take a few slow breaths, visualizing calm and stability rising from the earth into your body.
4. Set an Intention
Think about what you want to nurture in the coming months.
Write this intention down or say it aloud. Example: “I welcome balance, clarity and calm into my life.”
Light a candle to symbolize your intention taking root.
5. Close and Integrate
Take a final deep breath, gently moving your hands over your body to integrate the energy.
Carry this sense of balance and calm with you into your day and the coming season.
Bring This Energy into Your Daily Life
Even after the equinox, you can continue to practice small daily rituals that honour balance: mindful breathing, grounding sound meditations, gentle movement or rolling grounding oils on your pulse points. These practices help you stay centered, release tension and flow with the season naturally.
As the light and dark meet in harmony, so can we. ' Audra Dover'
